Joel,
I saw this video for the first time today. As I was watching, the thought came to me that David had made the covenant with Jonathan but Jonathan was now dead so the benefits of the covenant were given to Mephibosheth.
In just the same way, God has made a covenant with Jesus and, when Jesus died, the benefits of the covenant were given to us. Mephibosheth did nothing to receive David's favor and we've done nothing to receive God's favor. It's been grace from beginning to end.
This was a great teaching. I'd never realized before what a wonderful parallel Mephibosheth's story is to our redemption. Thanks for sharing it.
Aida
Hi Aida,
Amen! Mephibosheth was the beneficiary of the covenant, just as we are the beneficiaries of the covenant between the Father and the Son. David made promises, and he even went so far as to seek out the family members of Saul and Jonathan so that he could fulfill his promises.
Yeah, if not for having heard one sermon on Mephibosheth about a dozen years ago, I would never have caught the symbolism in the story!
